Young Adult - Movie Review

Young Adult's comedy won't appeal to everyone but it's a compelling watch.

Synopsis
Soon after her divorce, a fiction writer returns to her home in small-town Minnesota, looking to rekindle a romance with her ex-boyfriend, who is now happily married and has a newborn daughter.

Who's In It
Charlieze Theron - Brilliant acting, horrible character
Patrick Wilson - The high school love interest
Patton Oswalt - playing a disabled confidant for Theron
Jill Eikenberry! A long way from her days in L.A. Law. Playing Theron's mother

What I Thought
It's black comedy people, so black in fact it's delusional. I found myself laughing but at the fact that Theron's character is so deluded in what she is thinking and doing.

The title of the film, Young Adult, is a pun as while it's the name of the novels she writes, she herself has never grown up. She's also lazy, an alcoholic, gorges on unhealthy food yet looks unnaturally thin in parts. Theron's character gets ideas for her novels by listening into teenagers conversations while she's out and about, she's basically stealing ideas from others rather than being creative herself.

Paris Hilton wannabe
Theron does however play her character flawlessly. She was the high school prom queen, who was horrible to everyone other than the popular people in school. She was the only one who ever made anything of herself in this small town and moved to the city and became semi-successful. She's self absorbed, was a bitch back then and is still a bitch now, just a delusional one. Overall, she's just not a very nice person, and for that reason it's hard to like her, and associate with her.

It's also they reason why some people will also struggle to like this film. Yes it's a comedy and yes I liked it. You'll need to watch it to find out if you do too.

Memorable Quotes
I'm going to have to come back and fill these in some other time. I saw and early screening and was unable to make notes. There are a few good lines though, I just can't remember them right now.

Rating
3/5 - Like Marmite, it won't be everyone's cup of tea

Trailer
Gives you an idea of the comedy, the delusion of it

  1. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea. But I appreciated it as a dark comedy & personal drama.
